What Do University Students Need to Carry?
Generally, university students are a special group of people who play an important role in our society. Many people believe that university students are the future that they use their knowledge to build our colorful future after they graduate. Many people would like to describe them as a group of people who have grown up, but are not totally mature. They finished their high school education, but their knowledge is limited. Many of them live without parents, yet they do not know how to take care of themselves. Many of them know many theories, but lack experience. Many of them live and study with new people, but they might have some communication problems with others. How do university students conquer these problems? Many people forcefully believe that university students need to carry responsibility, improve communication skills, and better the ability to take care of themselves. Those skills will shape university students into good citizens and successful persons.
Responsibility is a significant skill that university students carry. Universities are public places in which everyone shares school’s properties. Students are responsible to take care of any property such as: library books, school chairs, water, foods and so on. As university students, they also are responsible for their classes. They need to attend every class. However, many students will be absent in a big class. They think the professor will not notice this because there are a lot of students. Also, universities are not like high schools where teachers will assign and collect all homework. At universities, teachers will not collect all homework. Students have the responsibility to study by themselves. In this case, students should know how to manage their time. It is an inadequate method to wait for the last second to finish all your homework. Furthermore, students need to know how to deal with parents’ expectation and families’ hopes. In order to make those hopes come true, they are responsible for working hard. Additionally, university students are like bridges between new countries and parents in many immigrant families. They are the links which help their parents to understand new cultures. In addition, they have responsibility to set a good example for their sisters or brothers, and even the next generations.
Additionally, communication is the important skill that university students carry. On April 16th, a terrible tragedy happened at Virginia Technology University. A Korean student, Seung-Hui Cho shot 32 people early in the morning because he experienced a lack of communication with other students and teachers. In order to release his anger, he killed people including himself. This tragedy emphasizes that university students need to carry communication skills. Whether in classes or in the dorm, students should be able to communicate with each other. In class, when students do group work, they have to communicate with each other about their ideas or opinions. If they do not work well together, that will decrease students’ grades. In the dorm, roommates are like best friends and can share feelings with each other. They can talk about weather, news, jokes and so on. Communication is the way to connect two different people together. It combines both their cultures and knowledge. When they are talking to each other, they also learn from others. Many universities at New York State accept different ethnic groups from different counties. The foreign students bring their own customs, beliefs, and traditional cultures to the new country. In the beginning, different ethnic groups often do not understand each other. For example, some ethnic groups do not eat pork because they think pigs are their ancestors, and they will feel angry when some one asks them to have pork. If they talk to each other, they will not make those kinds of mistakes. Likewise, many immigrant students feel so stressed when they do not understand a teacher’s lesson or a classmate’s conversation. They feel ashamed to ask other students because they think other students will laugh at them. Also, these new immigrant students feel so disconcerted that, day by day, they may start to isolate themselves.

Because of this, they carry the ability to take care of themselves. Some students are good at academic areas, so they are accepted by great universities. However, they do not know how to live by themselves, so they have to drop out of school. Some students bring their parents to school during school time. Those events strongly explain that university students should get more experience living on their own. Additionally, many university students feel curious about the unknown world. They often are fascinated by alcohol, video games, and sex. Some university students stay at the bar for the whole night. The following day, they cut classes for sleep. Besides, university girls are young and pretty. They are thirsty for a romantic love. However, many drunken girls frequently are seduced by many bad people at bars. That is why university girls should know how to take care themselves and exercise self-control. In addition, some students are not active. They would rather enjoy video games because they are successful while playing video games. Thus, university students need to have the ability to take care of themselves physically and mentally.
Many opportunities are waiting for people in the future. We live in a growing world in desperate need of fresh energy. Many people think university students will be the fresh energy, and they robustly believe this fresh energy not only needs to carry responsibility, communication skills, but also carry the ability to take care of themselves. These skills help university students to be successful in the future. As the builders of our future, university students are responsible for making their own lives fruitful and eventually help to make other people’s lives fruitful, too.
